Personal Statement
Hi, my name is Harshini Mukundan. I grew up in India. When I was ten years old, I overheard a conversation at a wedding that has always stuck with me. An elderly relative was lamenting about not being able to find a suitable groom for her daughter. The woman felt she was to blame becauce she had allowed her daughter to study too much. How would she ever find a man who was more educated than her daughter?
This disturbed me, and I discussed it with my grandfather. He said a man did not have to be more educated than his wife to be a good husband, and any man who didn’t agree would never make a good husband in the first place. My grandfather then took out a piece of paper and wrote my name on it, followed by various accreditations and degrees. He made me promise that some-day I would have a business card that looked like this- that some-day I would have my own identity.
I made that my mission. Today, I have (a PhD in Biomedical Sciences AND my own identity. And by the way, I also found a good husband.
