State Of Afterschool

State of Afterschool

Mississippi’s First Searchable Map of Afterschool

The Mississippi Statewide Afterschool Network wanted to create a mapping tool to better understand the landscape of afterschool and summer programs available for children and families. From the initial launch of the new mapping tool, we have identified some useful findings.

  • We have identified 242 programs are serving 20,849 students in Mississippi, more than half which are childcare centers
  • The majority of programs serve afterschool and summer programs
  • Half of afterschool programs in Mississippi provide transportation
  • The top three activities offered in afterschool programs in Mississippi are homework help, physical activity and youth leadership
  • 141 afterschool programs in Mississippi offer STEM learning

How to Use the Interactive Dashboard

You can use the interactive dashboard to better understand how afterschool and summer learning programs are meeting the needs of youth in Mississippi and where there are gaps and areas to improve. The data can be filtered by county using the location filter in the top right corner of the dashboard.

On the bottom half of the dashboard is a map of the afterschool and summer programs. The programs are mapped in orange dots, and counties are outlined in gray.

The counties are shaded in different colors based on the data indicator that is selected. A darker colored county means a higher number or percentage for that specific indicator.

You can view the location of afterschool and summer programs in the context of different youth indicators. These include:

  • Youth population numbers
  • Youth experiencing food insecurity
  • Youth proficiency on MAAP ELA assessments
  • Public high school graduation rate
  • Number of afterschool and summer programs

There are also some search buttons where you can type in a specific program to find its location. You can search for a program by its Site Location Name, the Organization Operating the Program, County, and Legislative District.

You can move your cursor to hover over a county on the map to view the specific data point and total number of afterschool and summer programs in the county.

If you want to download or print the dashboard, locate the “Download” icon in the bottom right of the dashboard. You can download an image, PDF, or PowerPoint of the page according to the filters selected.

About the Data Mapping Initiative

The Mississippi Statewide Afterschool Network launched the first-ever interactive mapping site of out-of-school time programs for families and partners. The map serves as a valuable tool for community leaders and policymakers to better understand the afterschool landscape, visualize gaps in service and identify community needs.

Now more than ever, families need to be able to search for and find out-of-school time programs in their communities to:

  • Support their children’s education and overall well-being, especially turning around learning loss due to COVID-19
  • Provide a safe, reliable program for their children while parents go to work to provide for their families.

This interactive map will make it easier for families to find these important resources and provide up-to-date information on the state of afterschool care for policymakers.
